Inspirations from a Poet Laureate

“If you get – give.”  “If you learn – teach.” Just some of the powerful words that sparked inspired thought throughout my home and family recently after watching an episode of Oprah’s Master Class with Maya Angelou.

Touched by the genuine spirit and overwhelming honesty of one of our nation’s Poet Laureates and visionary, Ms. Angelou seemed to reach to the heart of what I needed to hear.  In the process, she also managed to fire up the imaginations and mindsets of my daughters as well as evidenced by the presence of her words in my one daughter’s vision board, another’s vision journal and Maya’s books on our shelves.  I wonder how many other people worldwide came away as well from that program, her books or her recordings with that same new renewed respect for the weight of words.

What can we take away from it today? To choose our words wisely.  They have the power to heal, inspire, make us laugh and help us love.   They also have the ability to hurt deeply, fuel anger, cut deep someone’s self-worth, ruin days and even lives.

This day, choose your words carefully. Take inventory – pay attention to the affect your words have on those around you.  Go out of your way to test their power.  Inspire.  Make someone laugh.  Boost someone’s confidence.  Tell loved ones you love them.  Compliment a stranger.  Praise a child. I dare you to leave a wake of good tidings behind you today.

My thanks to “Mama Angelou”- it was good to sit at the bountiful table of her lifelong lessons!

Take to heart and mind her words, “If you get – give.”  “If you learn – teach.” Pass them on.  As words to live by go…they’re pretty good ones.  Don’t you think?
