I was asked by an agent the other day for my advice  on the top three things they should do to help make the New Year ahead more successful.  Talk about your loaded questions-right?  Truthfully, there’s a giant spectrum of things you could and should do to increase your odds of success in the next twelve months but the best three?  That’s tough.

So I thought about it for a while.  What could I tell this agent, or an entrepreneur – or even my daughters for that matter about what I would wish for them to embrace to ensure a better future?  While there are so many lessons yet to learn, these are the three wishes that bubbled up to the surface this morning.  See what you think and let me know what wishes YOU’D make for the year ahead if someone asked you the very same question!

Wish #1:  Work at it every day. There’s no time like the present to make things happen.  I’m not suggesting you never take a day off – that’s an important part of the process as well.  What I am asking you to do is consider however is how important every day is to your future’s ultimate success or failure.  So, if you really believed every 24 hours vital, would you even waste one minute not being true to yourself?  Would you, like so many, miss opportunity after possibility in front of you again because you were so busy wallowing in the past or worrying about what was on someone else’s plate to see them?  No!  Not you – right?  You get it.  Each day is a gift to make the most of.

Channel your inner Walt Disney, one of the most inventive and inspired minds of our time who said, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, doing new things because we’re curious, and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”  Fuel each day with a strong, vibrant vision for your future and feed that vision with positive affirmation, solid belief and everyday actions that will “keep moving you forward” towards your goals.  Never again waste time on self-doubt, negative influences or those activities that take you in the exact opposite direction of who you are or where you want to be.  Your time is yours to invest however you like.  Spend it wisely.

Wish #2:  Be grateful.  Oh, heaven help us from the self-proclaimed, “self-made” success stories.  We’re all truly products of everything and everyone who’s ever touched our lives – good, bad or indifferently.  While it’s up to us to channel the good, jettison off the bad and treat the indifference in kind – I’ve rarely met a truly well-rounded successful person who didn’t invite the spirit of gratitude in for a spell every day and host it with a humble heart.  They are continuously thankful to the people that help them–the mentors, teacher and family and friends that support and nurture them every step of the way.  They’re grateful for the opportunities, the possibilities, the lessons learned and even the obstacles and challenges that force them to adapt, grow and overcome.  They have faith and hold tightly to it in both tough times and joyous times and give their thanks for that faith daily.  They believe with their whole heart in the philosophy mirrored in Mary McLeod Bethune’s words, “Without faith, nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible.”

Be grateful, for your everyday “gift” of opportunity, for the people that surround you and help sculpt who you are and who you will become, for the hurdles that will force you to grow and the blessings that you’re able to count.  Give your thanks to all of those things with love, laughter, an open mind and an open heart and you’ll be amazed at the transformation that you will see in your life.

Wish #3:  Take action. If I had a quarter for every inspired idea that never took flight in this world because it was never acted upon I’d be able to bump Oprah off the Forbes list of rich.  It’s great to have dreams, goals and passion – and greater still to put those things into action so that you might actually see them come to fruition and seed your success.  Tim Ferriss summed this up perfectly when he said, “It isn’t enough to think outside the box. Thinking is passive. Get used to acting outside the box.”  What can you do today and every day to move yourself in the direction of your dreams?  What ACTIONS can you put into play?  What tasks can you check off the to-do list either by personally accomplishing them, re-directing them or delegating them so that you can keep on the track for success?  As they say, “talk’s cheap” my friends – if you want to get to the top of your particular ladder you’re going to have to put one foot and then another in front of you and start climbing.  Get moving!

There’s a new year ahead and that is always a wonderful time to invoke change in your life.  It’s a personal thing – with the potential to ignite greatness if you’re ready, willing and able to let go, expand your thoughts, your actions and really give it your all.  Ask yourself a la Henry Ford, “What would you attempt to do if you knew you couldn’t  fail?”  Go ahead – subtract the doubt, fire up the faith, and ACT on EACH DAY with GRATITUDE.  I believe in you – let’s go make 2011 extraordinary—shall we?

Now, let me ask YOU…What would your THREE THINGS be? Post them here and let’s learn from each other!
