Three Wishes…That Could Make All the Difference in Your 2011
I was asked by an agent the other day for my advice  on the top three things they should do to help make the New Year ahead more successful.  Talk about your loaded questions-right? …

I love that great state of Texas motto, “Go BIG or go home.”  It epitomizes the spirit of unlimited thinking.  Too often the barriers to our success have nothing to do with outside forces and everything to do with the walls that we put up in our own minds for what we believe we can or cannot do.

Vince Lombardi had it right, “We would accomplish many more things if we did not think of them as impossible.”   Or Norman Vincent Peale when he said, “Change your thoughts and you change your world.”  Much more than just a “thought for the day,” these statements are testimony to the power of the human mind when put to the test.  So if you’re life, career, mindset could use a little “expansion” – take a look at these five ideas for unleashing your thinking and living a more fulfilled, successful life.

1.  Banish these words from your vocabulary: don`t, not, stop, can`t, won`t, should`ve, would`ve, and could`ve.   Make no mistake, words are powerful things.  These negative ‘mind stops’ keep you rooted in the impossible and reinforce inability, indecision and low self-esteem.

2.  Adopt positive affirmation. Just as negative words cement us to old thought patterns and closed door thinking, starting and ending your day with positive affirmations, written in the present tense, fueled with powerful life and career changing words absolutely can and will change your life

Some of my favorites

  • When given a choice between faith and fear, I will always choose faith. (Courtesy of my incredible mom!)
  • When faced with a choice to be right or be kind, choose kind. (Courtesy of Wayne Dyer)
  • We will always have what we need and more.
  • I thank God for today’s blessings and tomorrow’s opportunity.
  • My success is contagious and shared with those around me.
  • My children are happy, healthy, whole and have limitless opportunities.
  • “I will always be guided to do and say the things that lead to my success.  Everything that happens– happens in my best interest.” (Courtesy of Floyd Wickman)
  • I am grateful each day for blessings and my adversities –both hold seeds of opportunity.

3.  Choose wisely. An obvious suggestion is to choose your friends and associates wisely.  Truly successful people realize that there comes a time in life when you can no longer afford to keep people in your life who drain you, hold you back or cause you to question your heart and your head.  Sure, maybe you’ve known them since pre-school or college dorm days, but if every conversation you have with them leaves you feeling angry, unhappy or drained of your positive emotional energy, is it worth the tie?  It’s a tough decision for a lot of people and I’m not suggesting it’s an easy thing to let go, but believe me you’ll do both yourself and that person a favor.  Think of it this way –people like that are like fire. They need YOUR oxygen to keep burning up those negative thoughts, words and actions.  Walk away and YOU breathe easier and they might just finally realize that our world needs people that are willing to be part of the solution – not consistently part of the problem.

4.  Keep your “rut-busters” handy. It’s a wild ride – trying to balance family, career, relationships, and life in a world where demands are at an all-time high and resources, for many at a premium.  It’s way too easy to fall into a rut.  More often than not, ruts are based in boredom, and boredom leads to apathy and that – well can lead to your own little version of anarchy! Next time you feel a “rut” coming on, (or if you want to take PREVENTATIVE measures) try one of these ideas on for size:

  • Take a different path to or from work: Sounds silly doesn’t it?  Think about it though.  Have you ever driven to or from work and realized you can’t remember a thing about it?  You put yourself on “autopilot” and tuned out?  That’s a pre-curser to boredom.  Change things up a little, get a change of scenery and look for just one source of inspiration on the way, it could change your entire attitude!
  • Meet new people. Join a networking group, or invite a new colleague to coffee.  New people offer new perspectives and that can create a “light bulb” moment for you of seeing something differently.
  • Get a mentor and be a mentor. There is something incredible about having these relationships in your life.  By opening yourself up to  both the learning and teaching process and the inherent integrity-partnership that comes with them, you give yourself tremendous ammunition to not only stay out of life’s invariable potholes, but more importantly, you are providing the fuel to take you wherever your goals and dreams may lead.

5. Keep learning. It really is extraordinary when you think of how lightning fast new technology, tools, strategies and solutions are at our fingertips every day.  The world is all at once both expanding with boundless possibilities and shrinking in our ability to connect and communicate with people around the globe in an instant.  Today, there are no reasonable excuses to fail.  There just aren’t.  Not for lack of money, knowledge or opportunity.  Everything you need to jet-propel your life for the better can be found online 24/7 or in your local library.  The seeds of greatness shared by some of the most brilliant minds in whatever field you choose can be yours for the planting.  If you truly want to adopt unlimited thinking, then exercise the most important muscle you have – your brain! Feed your mind with high-test fuel, step out of the “norm” on a regular basis; try new tools, technologies and strategies on for size.

So this is it.  Your time.  Your chance to make a difference.  What are you waiting for?  Go big or go home – right?  Let’s go make our Texas friends proud of us.  Take a chance, dare to step out of your comfort zone and set your mind to “expansion” mode.  I’ll see you out there and remember – mindset matters!
